Dear all,
Sorry I have to post in english as I do not have enough german skill to have a technicall discussion in german with you.
Hope the post is in the right category. And sorry to clone this topic which I guess is already highly covered on the forum)
I am looking for some information about a multitronic gearbox that do not works any more on a 2007 Audi A5 with 2.7L diesel V6 engine.
I explain what happened on the car :
- The car was going fine on the highway (100 - 130km/h)
- Stop at the toll to pay
- restart from the tol
- few minutes later traction lost, engine turning alone
- stop on the right of the highway
- no warning light everythings appears as being normal
- no response of the gearbox on any position
- do no feel anymore the the gear box clutching when putting on drive
Audi ask for more than 7500 euros for an exchange and do not want to pay for anything.
Questions :
- Is this failure something known ? Is it the mettallic belt ? the 6 disc clutch ? an actuator ? electronic unit ?
- Is is possible to repair by my self (I've seen some guys doing it on the forum but I am not sure of what was their root cause, was it the clutch ?)
- If I can't do it by my self, which company do you advise to me (if possible one located in the west of germany, I'm french)
PS: I thnig gearbox and engine number in my profile are not the right one, would be nice if you could confirm theme to me : Audi A5 multitronic 2007 V6 2.7L Diesel
Thanks in advance guys.
Nice WE.

Hi!
Do you happen to know somebody with a computer system (VCDS) to read out your transmission control unit? That s allways the first try as you can gather a lot of information and a rough direction of what caused your fault.

Hi Bernd,
Thanks for your reply.
No chance to read the ECU, the car is blocked at the garage and Audi just says the gearbox is to be replaced.
Basically what are the "classic" root causes of multitronic failures ?
I heard / read :
- 6 discs clutch which is too weak (to be replaced by 7 discs)
- internal hydraulic actuators
- control unit failure
I've called a company in France to repair it, they just did say between 2500 and 3500 euros without knowing anything of what's happening into the ECU....
So I'm looking for more robust information.
Jérémie

AUDI A5 multitronic issue (non german speaker)
Hi!
Without further information (fault codes / values from transmission control unit) all of the following is guesswork.
When you say the engine reved up without anything from the gerabox I would say that either your chain came appart or the oil pump within the control valve assembly broke down.
With an appropriate computer you could very easy diagnose this (an Audi workshop should be capable of this but most times they simply don't want to)
Answering your question about repair: it is repairable, lot of people did this as their first gearbox repair, you need a lift and a good filled toolbox. There are only few special tools needed which aren't so special anymore [emoji6] (big pullers and so on)
Depending on the fault you need to expect costs of 600 to 1400 €
But again! It s all guesswork as long as you aren't able comunicate with the transmission control unit ....

Ok Bernd, you gave me two very important informations, that is reparable with a good filled tool box (I have a very filled one
) and the price (far less than the 7000 euros of Audi ....).
That looks good.
I'll keep you informed of the next steps.

Where are you from?
There are a plenty of people who have a VCDS system at home so that you can read out the error codes of the system..

Hello Jérémie,
I'm french too and I have exactly the same problem with the same car.
What did you do since your problem ?
No fault code and same symptoms, so I dismantled my gearbox:
- Secondary pulleys are failed
- Chain is broken
- Primary pulleys are damaged
Regards,
Jérôme
